The University of Cyprus (UCY) was founded in 1989. As the largest public Higher Education institution in Cyprus it has been established at a national and international level, while constantly working towards becoming a sustainable university of worldwide research impact. UCY offers a wide variety of Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs from eight Faculties and 22 Departments. It has managed to grow into a leading European institution, which is recognized for providing quality teaching, encouraging and promoting high-impact research.
The University of Cyprus strives for excellence in education, research and innovation, and simultaneously aims to contribute to the cultural, social and economic development of Cyprus.
In this context, the University aspires to offer more than a standardized accumulation of knowledge to the students. It focuses on inspiring students to be actively present, participate and contribute to the process of learning while acquiring the necessary tools and values for being responsibly involved in the community. Evidence of this consistent effort to excel in all disciplines/fields can be discerned by its inclusion in all distinguished world university rankings: in 2020, the University of Cyprus ranked #601-700 in the Shanghai List, #401-500 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and was among the top 477 universities in the QS University overall Rankings 2021.
UCY is a relatively new, yet rapidly-expanding university and the largest employer for graduates and researchers in Cyprus. It currently employs more than 500 young scientists using external research program funds. The University of Cyprus is globally networked and an active contributor to European and international scientific advancements.
Being an innovative academic institution, UCY decided to create a modern Production studio, to upgrade the educational tools by keeping up-to-date with the social and technological trends. The need for setting up a production studio was magnified due to the introduction of the Bachelor degree in Journalism which requires that students practice in a realist environment that could enhance their creativity and provide them with inspiration. Moreover, the studio could be used for promotion and communication purposes, as well as collaboration and news-sharing with other organizations.
To achieve this, UCY proceeded with the following tender: "Supply, Installation and Configuration of AV Production studio and Playout facility”. The most attractive offer with the highest quality and value of all competitors was submitted by Pierides TechnoSystems Ltd.
For the implementation of the project, a combination of multiple vendors and equipment was integrated, such as Riedel Communications, Ross Video 4K Carbonite Vision Mixer, PlayBox Neo 4K Integrated Playout System, Tiger Technology Central Storage, Blackmagic 4K Cameras, Canon Lenses, Cuescript Teleprompter, Cartoni Telescopic Jib, Behringer Sound Mixer.
This project thrived owing to the clear goals that were set right from the start between PTS and the University of Cyprus, and the common vision of innovation they both shared. This consensus allowed for the installation of the equipment to be fast and successful.
The AV Production Studio and Playout is an innovation for the educational field, and the capability of video production with 4K/UHD is a novelty for Greece and Cyprus. With these new facilities, the University of Cyprus can now offer its students and faculty specialized services and unique educational tools that differentiate it from other educational institutions at an international level.
